The Hempstead County Jail was built in 1872. It remained a jail serving Washington and Hempstead County, Arkansas, until 1939. It was used as a holding facility for all of Hempstead Counties criminals until the county seat has moved to Hope and a new jail and courthouse were built.

The old jail sat abandoned for years until it was converted into a low-income apartment building. After a few years the jails was once again abandoned. In the early 1980’s the jail was renovated and turned into a Bed and Breakfast.
