Phenomena captured on film: Because of the amount of plastic covered displays the courtroom was not the best place to take photos. The brass fittings produced reflections that looked very much like spirit energy so very few photos could be used as evidence in the courtroom. Very few orbs were captured during our visit. Some of the orbs were interesting but only one stood out as a possible spirit energy. This one was captured in the courtroom. It was small but well formed and displayed motion. It was captured high and away from outside influences. It passed our shape and density test. It fit the type that indicates high concentration of energy by being round and dense. We did attempt to gather some EVP data. One short EVP was recorded that sounded like a whistle. It is thought that when this type of EVP is recorded that poltergeist activity is present.

The dousing rods were used extensively in the courtroom. Investigator Alan, Jason, Terri and Christine did make contact using the dousing rods.  First contact was with a young black female. The story line developed that she was there with her brother and wanted to cross over but would not do so until he did. As the questioning continued the name of the brother was discovered. It was Andrew Springer. He is staying around because he has unfinished business. He was lynched because he was accused of raping a white woman in a nearby town. He now has a great dislike of white women and is staying around to torment them. This did happen to three of our female investigators. Andrew is not leaving until he is satisfied that the reason for his hanging is vindicated.

Summation:  There were eight investigators on this investigation. The team psychic, Melisa, was present at all locations. Of the eight investigators eight made a visit to the Courthouse at various times during the evening. We divided the eight investigators into 4 teams of two and sent them to different locations throughout the park. We attempted to cycle each team in and out of all 5 historic locations. Jason and I, Alan, were not assigned to any certain team. We acted as resource managers floating between all teams. Building assignments were made and each team was told they would be changing areas about every 45 minutes until we had all been to each building. We wanted all of the teams to have the chance to experience paranormal activity wherever it was found. Melisa the team psychic was allowed to enter each building first. She made contact in several areas as the night progressed. There were other spirit sensitives scattered throughout the four teams.

The team psychic did contact with a a black male named Andrew in the Courthouse. The contact was brief in the courtroom but in the attic and by the jail details were revealed concerning his life, death and his reason for remaining. The psychic was touched and made to feel that Andrew was not trying to be nice. Investigator Polly and Christine were made to feel unwanted as they tried to go in the attic. They became very sick and had to go out for air. The attic is where Andrew hides. Investigator Alan was physically contacted in the attic. He was trying to draw Andrew out by verbalizing his desire for him to leave and that if he didn’t leave of his own accord that we SPIRIT Seekers would move him by conducting a spiritual cleansing. Once this was said it felt as if hundreds of fire ants had been dumped on his body. Alan left the attic as quickly as possible and the feeling was gone.

Our grading system helps us determine if a building or house is haunted. Before we say whether or not a haunting exists all of the evidence is evaluated and assigned points. We use the following system; Scientific evidence consists of pictures, recordings both video and audio, EMF readings and temperature readings. ( 0 – 50 pts.) Sensory evidence consists of our five senses (0 – 25 pts.) and extra sensory evidence consists of psychic or medium contact (0 – 25 pts.)  The 1888 Courthouse received 30 pts for scientific, 25 pts for sensory and 20 pts for extra sensory. Total 75 pts.

Conclusion: We feel that the 1888 Courthouse at Powhatan State park has paranormal activity going on in the building. We believe that even though the scientific evidence was not great that the Courthouse is haunted.
